Distribution area of the southern brown horseshoe bat

The southern brown horseshoe bat ( Rhinolophus stheno ) is a bat in the horseshoe bat family that is found in Southeast Asia .

features

The species is a medium-sized family member with a head body length of 44 to 56 mm, a tail length of 15 to 21 mm and a weight of 6 to 10.5 g. It has 42 to 48 mm long forearms and 15 to 22 mm long ears. The top is covered with dark brown to reddish brown fur, while on the underside there is significantly lighter fur. Due to long stays in caves, the fur may fade and appear orange. The main part of the nasal blade has a horseshoe shape. Inside there is a smaller round leaf with a horn-like attachment. The edges of the horseshoe are darker than the inner areas. The small eyes of the species are almost invisible on the edge of the nasal blade.

Distribution and way of life

The southern brown horseshoe bat occurs from Myanmar , Laos and Vietnam via Thailand , the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra to Java . Presumably it can also be found in Cambodia . The bat lives in the lowlands and in mountains up to 1,200 meters above sea level. Original forests, managed deciduous forests, arable land and other cultural landscapes serve as habitats . Usually the species lives in the vicinity of limestone cliffs .

The individuals rest under overhanging cliffs, in crevices, in caves and in tree hollows. You orient yourself with the help of echolocation , the frequency of the calls being between 85 and 96.5 kHz. In females there is usually a litter with a young between May and July. This is worn by the mother for about two months on excursions.

status

Except for a limited hunt in northern Thailand, there are no threats to the population. The southern brown horseshoe bat is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN .
