The large-leaved root star moss ( Rhizomnium magnifolium ) is about 2 to 6 cm in size and forms leaves up to 1 cm long and 6 mm wide. Its stems are usually covered with a dense rhizoid felt , which consists of micro- (small, lateral rhizoids arising between the leaf and the stem) and macronemata (larger, axillary rhizoids). The obverse-shaped to elliptical leaves have a short, blunt tip. The leaf vein ends just before the tip. The leaf border consists of 1 to 5 rows of elongated, mostly brownish colored cells. Rhizomnium magnifolium is a circumboreal species that occurs in the mountains of Europe, East Asia, North America and Greenland. It settles in springy, nutrient and base poor locations of the montane and alpine altitudes and can be found in forest swamps and in spring meadows.
