The Bryales are an order of the moss that is very diverse. They are also very old phylogenetically.
features
The Bryales are acrocarpic mosses. With the exception of the Pulchrinodaceae, there are no pseudoparaphyllia. The lamina cells of the leaflets are elongated (prosenchymatic) and smooth. The leaf veins are simple and mostly of the Bryum or Mnium type. The peristome is of the Bryum type. Between each endostome segment there are one to five eyelashes. Sometimes the peristome is reduced, rarely completely absent.
Systematics
The Bryales are a very old group. Fossils from the Permian are known from Russia . There are also several extinct genera that are very similar to the Bryales in their leaf structure (rib, cellular network and lined leaf margin).
The Bryales include the following families:
- Bryaceae family
- Family Leptostomataceae
- family Mniaceae
- Family Phyllodrepaniaceae
- Family Pseudoditrichaceae
- Family Pulchrinodaceae
The order in this description is monophyletic and based on molecular genetic data.
