Rhopalus maculatus is a bug from the family of glass wing bugs (Rhopalidae).

features

Like all species of the tribe Rhopalini, Rhopalus maculatus is medium-sized and elongated and, like most species of the tribe, is very hairy. The animals reach a body length of 7.5 to 8.2 mm. The pronotum does not show a light center line.

The body is red-brown, often almost red. The abdomen is reddish yellow to reddish brown and has a wide, black jagged stripe on the edge. The connexive shows round black spots on each segment.

distribution and habitat

The distribution area extends from Europe to Siberia, Rhopalus maculatus is only absent in Europe in the north of the British Isles and Scandinavia . The species is widespread in Germany and Austria and is occasionally common locally.

Rhopalus maculatus colonizes moist habitats such as fens , wet meadows, wet tall herbaceous vegetation , banks of water and similar habitats.

Way of life

Like all glass wing bugs, Rhopalus maculatus is phytophagous and mainly feeds on the fruits of its host plants. It was found on swamp thistle ( Cirsium palustre ), swamp porst ( Ledum palustre ), willowherb ( Epilobium spp.) And purple loosestrife ( Lythrum spp.). The most important food plant in Central Europe, however, is the swamp blood-eye ( Potentilla palustris ), and nymphs have also been detected on this plant .

The species overwinters as an imago and can be observed from May after the hibernation. Mating and oviposition were observed in May and June. Apparently only one generation is trained in Central Europe, newly hatched adults can be observed from August to September. The bugs hibernate in drier habitats in grass groves under plant rosettes or in moss cushions.
