Rhumsiki (also: Rumsiki , Roumsiki ) is a place in the province of Extrême-Nord , which forms the northern tip of Cameroon . It is located near the border with Nigeria in the Mandara Mountains . The city of Mokolo is 55 km away and the border with Nigeria is only 3 km. The village consists of small traditional stone houses with thatched roofs. The inhabitants belong to the Kapsiki ethnic group . Rhumsiki was at times a popular tourist attraction due to the surrounding landscape. However, since 2011 the area has been classified as a “high risk area”.

geography

The surrounding landscape is described as particularly romantic. The writer André Gide wrote that Rhumsiki's surroundings were "one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world". In the vicinity of the village there are numerous volcanic vents and basalt formations in the Mandara Mountains . The largest of these rocks is Kapsiki Peak , a vent that rises to 1224  m .

The chimney is considered a phallus symbol and traditionally, fertility offerings were made at its base. In more recent times the place has been advertised for honeymoon vacations.

philately

In a series about Cameroon, France dedicated stamps to the value of 500 francs to the “Piton d'Humsiki” in 1947 and 1952 . After independence in 1962, the “République fédérale du Cameroun” issued a stamp image worth F 500 with the title “Kapsikis Mokolo”. In 1980 the “République unie du Cameroun” published a stamp worth 50 F, entitled “Jeunes filles Bororo et pic Roumsiki” (Young Bororo Women and the Rhumsiki Peak).
