Rhys or Rice is the name of a noble Anglo - Welsh family .

The founder of the family is Gruffudd ap Nicolas , who during the reign of King Henry VI. became the most powerful official in South Wales and acquired the family estate of Newton House at Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire . His grandson Rhys ap Thomas , as a decisive supporter of King Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth , succeeded in becoming the most powerful official of South Wales again. Although he was inducted into the Order of the Garter , he did not succeed in attaining an English peerage , nor did he succeed in transferring his power and influence to his grandson Rhys ap Gruffydd FitzUrien after the untimely death of his son Gruffydd . He was beheaded as a traitor under King Henry VIII in 1531 and most of his property was confiscated by the crown. Rhys son Gruffydd from Rhys anglicized his name to Griffith Rice . He managed to regain part of his father's property under Queen Maria . His descendant Henry Rice received back from King Charles I all of the family's former goods that were still in royal possession. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Rice family were among the leading gentry families in Carmarthenshire and provided several MPs to the House of Commons . In 1756 George Rice married Cecil Talbot , the only daughter of William Talbot, 1st Earl Talbot . The title Baron Dynevor , created shortly before his death, passed on to his daughter and, after her death, to her male descendants. Cecil Talbot took the name de Cardonell after the death of her mother , but her son George de Cardonell, 3rd Baron Dynevor, changed the family name again to Rice in 1817.

By marriage and inheritance, the family's property had increased to over 43 km² by 1883, mainly in Carmarthenshire and Glamorgan . In addition, the family was involved in the heavy industry in South Wales since Griffith Rice had acquired a share of Neath Abbey by marriage around 1700 . In 1916 the 7th Baron changed the spelling of the family name to Rhys. The decline of heavy industry and high inheritance taxes following the deaths of the 7th Baron in 1956 and the 8th Baron in 1962 forced the 9th Baron to sell much of his property and, in 1974, the Newton House family estate.
