Griffith Rice (* around 1664; † September 26, 1729 in Bath ) was a British politician .

Origin and youth

Rice came from the old Welsh family Rhys , one of the leading families of the gentry of Carmarthenshire . He was the oldest and only surviving son of Walter Rice, a grandson of Walter Rice , and his wife Elizabeth, a daughter of Pierce Deere of Glamorgan and widow of Richard Games of Penderyn and Llanelli . From May 1682 Rice studied at Jesus College , Oxford .

Life

After his father's death around 1680, he inherited his estates, including Newton House . His estates gave him an annual income of about £ 300. From 1693 to 1694 he was Sheriff of Carmarthenshire. Supported by the Morgan family from Golden Grove and against the competitor Sir Thomas Powell he was elected in 1701 as a candidate of the Tories as Knight of the Shire for Carmarthenshire for the House of Commons . Nevertheless, from 1703 he voted several times against the bills of the Tories and from 1708 at the latest he belonged to the Whigs . As a consequence, he lost the 1710 election to Thomas Powell. He is said to have died of paralysis during a spa stay in Bath and was buried in Bath Abbey.

Family and offspring

In his first marriage he married Catherine Hobby, a daughter and co-heir of Philip Hobby. With her he had two sons and five daughters. By marriage he acquired part of the possessions of Neath Abbey . After the death of Catherine, he married Elizabeth Morgan, a daughter of John Morgan from Carmarthenshire, a second marriage.

Since his eldest son Edward had died in 1727, his son George became his heir.
