Riaan Cruywagen (born  October 5, 1945 ) is a South African television news anchor and voice actor . He has been reading the Afrikaans news every weekend since the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) began broadcasting in 1975 . Its last broadcast was broadcast on November 26, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.  CAT . By then he had presented 7,000 newscasts: during South Africa's troubled times, his constant voice was a sign of consistency.

Career

His journalist career began in 1965 when he started working part-time at SABC in Cape Town . At that time he was still studying at Stellenbosch University . He presented his first news item at 8:00 p.m. on November 26, 1975. The first news item that evening was about Breyten Breytenbach's sentencing to nine years in prison.

In June 2003 it was announced that Cruywagen's contract with SABC would not be renewed. This was followed by a campaign by citizens, which led to an agreement between SABC and UASA ( United Association of South Africa ): his contract was extended until further notice.

In the course of its long career, the name Riaan Cruywagen has become closely associated with Afrikaans television. In the mid-2000s, after his contract was renewed, Cruywagen once again became the center of popular culture in South Africa: Chuck Norris Facts- style jokes were spread about him on the internet, mostly about his ever-youthful appearance and intellectual prowess .

In addition to his journalistic work, he has lent his voice to the protagonist of the popular Afrikaans children's news program Haas Das se Nuuskas since 1976 . When a movie ( Haas Das hou konsert ) was produced from it in 2007 , he again played the role of Haas.

He got the role when he told Louise Smit (the show's founder) a joke. Then she touched him and shouted “I have my rabbit!” He also lent his voice to many of the characters in the children's program Liewe Heksie .

He also appeared in an advertising campaign for ATKV / Pendoring as a waiter in a restaurant that had a sign on the wall that read, “Moenie die taal afskeep never!” (Don't neglect the language! - with reference to Afrikaans). Cruywagen has also appeared in a few films where he played himself as a television news anchor, including a. he read the news in isiZulu in Leon Schuster's Sweet 'n Short . He also appeared in the crime film Stander as a nostalgic reminder of his long career as a news anchor.
