Ricardo Javier Tavarelli Paiva (born August 2, 1970 in Asunción ) is a former Paraguayan soccer goalkeeper .

career

Tavarelli began his professional career at Olimpia Asunción . He was very successful with the club and won several titles. In addition to winning the Torneo Republica in 1992, he also won the national championship six times.

2002 was a special year for Tavarelli. On the one hand, he took part in the World Cup with the national team, on the other hand, he won the Copa Libertadores and then reached the final of the World Cup with his club . However, the game was lost 2-0 to Real Madrid . A year later came with a 2-0 win against San Lorenzo, the next international title win in the Recopa Sudamericana .

In 2004 Tavarelli left his hometown club and moved to Gremio Porto Alegre in Brazil . However, he was denied great success there and returned to Olipmia. He then ended his career at Sportivo Luqueño .

Tavarelli had a strong competitor in the national team with José Luis Chilavert , so that he hardly came to international appearances. In 2002 he came to his only world championship appearance, as Chilavert was suspended at the start of the tournament.

Because of his quick reflexes, Tavarelli was nicknamed "El Mono" ("The Monkey"). His former national team-mate Roque Santa Cruz is married to Tavarelli's sister, Giselle.
