Richard Alexander (politician)
Richard Thain Alexander (born June 29, 1934 in Aberdeen , † April 20, 2008 in Newark-on-Trent ) was a British politician of the Conservative Party .
After studying law at University College London and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies , Alexander worked as a solicitor in Scunthorpe from 1960 to 1964 and in Retford , Nottinghamshire from 1964 to 1985 . In 1977 he became mayor of Retford.
In the general election in 1966 and 1970 he ran unsuccessfully for the constituency of Lincoln . In the 1979 election he was able to narrowly and unexpectedly beat the candidate of the Labor Party , Edward Stanley Bishop , in the Newark constituency and moved into the House of Commons . He lost his seat in the 1997 Labor Party election .
Alexander had been married to Valerie Ann Winn since 1966, the couple had a son and a daughter. After separating in 1979 and divorcing in 1985, Alexander married Pat Hanson in 1987.
