Richard Pepper Arden, 3rd Baron Alvanley (born December 8, 1792 , † June 24, 1857 ) was a British military member and member of the high nobility.

Family and title

Born as the second eldest son of the politician Richard Arden, 1st Baron Alvanley and his wife Dorothea Wilbraham-Bootle, Arden had five siblings. On April 24, 1831, he married Lady Arabella Vane, youngest daughter of William Vane, 1st Duke of Cleveland . The title of Baron Alvanley and the associated seat in the House of Lords passed to his older brother William after the death of his father in 1804 . After he died childless in 1849, Arden continued the title until his death. Since he had no children either, the title expired.

Military career

On March 19, 1811, Arden bought himself as a cornet in the regiment of the 15th The King's Hussars . On October 3, 1811, he was promoted to lieutenant . Between February 1813 and April 1814 he took part with his regiment in the Napoleonic War on the Iberian Peninsula and fought in the battles of Victoria , Orthez and Toulouse , among others . Since he could not afford the position as a captain in the cavalry , he joined the 2nd Garrison Battalion in 1815 with the rank of captain . On July 8, 1819, he transferred to the 32nd Regiment of Foot under half pay . On October 4, 1822, Arden bought himself a major in the 84th Regiment of Foot . On June 1, 1829, he gave up his half pay and moved to the Coldstream Guards , before retiring from military service three days later.
