William Arden, 2nd Baron Alvanley (born January 8, 1789 in London - † November 16, 1849 ) was a British military man and nobleman .

Family and title

Born the eldest son of the politician Richard Arden, 1st Baron Alvanley and his wife Dorothea Wilbraham-Bootle, Arden had five siblings. The title of Baron Alvanley and the associated seat in the House of Lords passed to him with the death of his father in 1804. After Arden himself died childless, his younger brother Richard continued the title.

Military career

Arden decided to join the military after completing his training. For this purpose, his father bought him, as was customary at the time, with the rank of ensign in the Coldstream Guards . There he was promoted to captain in March 1809 . He was later transferred to the 50th (Queen's Own) Regiment of Foot before he transferred to the 100th Regiment of Foot on September 1, 1812 on half pay . Because of his ever increasing debts, he had to give up half pay in 1826. He later served as a yeoman with the rank of cornet . On January 17, 1840, he resigned from the army.

Social life

Arden belonged to the close circle of friends of George IV during his time as Prince Regent . He was also close friends with George Bryan Brummell . Along with this, Arden was one of the co-founders of the Watier's Club . After Brummell fell out of favor with the Prince Regent and went into exile in France in 1837 , Arden supported him financially. He financed his own extravagant lifestyle initially from his inheritance. When his debts became rampant, much of the property had to be sold.
