Richard Hans Georg Bamler (* 1955 ) is a German communications engineer and university professor for remote sensing methods at the Technical University of Munich .

Life

Richard Bamler studied communications engineering ( Dipl.-Ing. ) At the Technical University of Munich until 1980 , where he did his doctorate in 1986 . In 1988, he completed his habilitation in the field of " Signal and System Theory " as a Dr.-Ing. habil. at his alma mater , and the following year he began his work as a researcher in the development of SAR - signal processing algorithms on the German Remote Sensing Data Center of the (DFD) German Center for Aerospace(DLR). In 1992 Bamler took over the management of the “Signal Processing Algorithms” group until he was promoted to head of the “Algorithms and Procedures” department in 1996. In the meantime, he was visiting scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena (California) for three months in 1994 and in 1996 also taught as a visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck . Richard Bamler became director of the Remote Sensing Technology Institute at DLR in 2000. In this position he is head of the Earth Observation Center together with the director of the DFD . Since 2003 he has held these positions together with the chair for remote sensing methods at the Technical University of Munich.

Bamler's research area lies in the development of processes and algorithms for the extraction of geographic information from remote sensing data. His focus is on synthetic aperture radar and the evaluation of optical image sequences, using German earth observation satellite missions (e.g. TerraSAR-X , TanDEM-X ).
