Richard "Irxl" Beer (born January 3, 1897 ) was an Austrian football player . Together with Josef Teufel he formed a famous defensive duo at the Wiener Sport-Club , the greatest successes being the championship in 1921/22 and the cup victory in 1923.

career

Richard Beer started in the student team of the Wiener Sport-Club in Dornbach, from where he switched to the Wiener Turf players before returning to his home club, where he played as a baker from 1914 to 1928, mostly together with his partner Josef Teufel during this time . The two complemented each other well, Teufel was considered a nimble player, Beer rather stocky and massive. Together with goalkeeper Edi Kanhäuser , the three were considered Austria's strongest defense at their wedding, in particular the interaction and the perfecting of the new way of playing with the offside trap (also known as the one-back system due to the offside rule then applicable ) they owed their good name.

After two failed attempts with defeats in the Cup finals in 1919 and 1921, the first big title was celebrated in the 1921/22 season with the narrow championship before the Hakoah . This was followed by the second in 1923 with a 3-1 win in the cup final against Wacker . In the period between 1920 and 1925, Richard Beer also played a total of eleven times in the national team . Big competitors were the Vienna defenders Josef Blum and Karl Rainer , so that the sports club duo was often torn apart and Richard Beer also played internationally, especially with Blum.
