Richard Berger (local history researcher)

Richard Berger (born August 3, 1900 in Leipzig ; † June 30, 1948 in special camp No. 1 Mühlberg ) was a German homeland researcher for the Erzgebirge village of Breitenbrunn .

Life

Berger studied at the Royal Teachers' College in Borna near Leipzig. After successfully completing his studies, he was employed as a teacher at the Breitenbrunn elementary school in 1924 . Berger was the first chairman of the Erzgebirgszweigverein Breitenbrunn from 1925 to 1933. In 1921 he founded the ski division in the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association "Vorwärts" Breitenbrunn. From 1925 to 1939 he headed the ski department within the civil German gymnastics club Breitenbrunn, which was founded in 1923 and which became part of the German Reich Association for physical exercise in 1934 . In 1933 Berger was appointed Gauschneelaufwart (a leading position in the ski association).

Berger wrote local history articles about Breitenbrunn and the surrounding area. In his research he worked with Hans Siegert , Siegfried Sieber and Walter Fröbe . His contributions to local history were received in the specialist press even after his death. Berger's history of the former Breitenbrunn paper mill was included in the 2003 International Bibliography on Paper History at the German Museum of Books and Writing in Leipzig.

During World War II , Richard Berger wrote home letters to Wehrmacht soldiers at the front. After the war he was arrested without giving a reason on September 12, 1945 and taken from Schwarzenberg Castle to special camp No. 4 in Bautzen and from there on October 9, 1945 to special camp No. 1 in Mühlberg . After three years in a camp, Richard Berger died on June 30, 1948 at the age of 47 of pulmonary tuberculosis . In 1995 he was declared dead and innocent by the Moscow Military Prosecutor's Office.
