Richard Cornwall-Legh, 6th Baron Gray of Codnor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Henry Cornwall-Legh, 6th Baron Gray of Codnor (born May 14, 1936 ) is a British nobleman and politician .

Origin and family environment

He was born on May 14, 1936 as the son of Charles Legh Shuldham Cornwall-Legh, 5th Baron Gray of Codnor (1903-1996) and Dorothee Scott († 1993).

His father comes in the female line from the old English noble family Gray, which was of very great political influence in the late Middle Ages and in the early modern period and led several titles of nobility in different lines (e.g. Marquess of Dorset , Earl of Kent , Earl of Stamford , Baron Gray de Wilton , Baron Gray de Ruthin ). The 9-day queen Jane Gray comes from this family . The line of the Barons Gray of Codnor is derived from Henry Gray, who was appointed to the royal council by a writ of summons on February 6, 1299 and thus became 1st Hereditary Baron Gray of Codnor. The title remained in the Gray family until the death of the 7th Baron, who died in 1496 without a male heir. The barony then fell into abeyance , in which it remained until 1989 when the current baron's father successfully petitioned the barony as a female descendant. Although he should have been the 8th baron as the successor to the last (seventh) male title holder who died in 1496, the Committee for Privileges and Conduct only awarded him the 6th baron of a barony founded in 1397 because the petitioner could not prove it that all seven barons had received a writ of summons from 1299 to 1496. Richard Cornwall-Legh is officially the 6th baron, and if counted from 1299 he would be the 9th baron.

Life

He received his education and schooling at the private school Stowe House . He then went through officer training with the Royal Navy . He became High Sheriff of Cheshire in 1993 and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the same county in 1995 . Upon the death of his father on December 23, 1996, he inherited his title as 6th Baron Gray of Codnor and his hereditary seat in the House of Lords . However, he lost this seat again in 1999 through the reform of the House of Lords because he was not one of the hereditary peers who were elected from the circle of the hereditary peers of the reformed House of Lords.

Marriage and offspring

He has been married to Joanna Storm Cayley, daughter of Sir Kenelm Henry Ernest Cayley, 10th Baronet, since September 28, 1974. The couple have three sons and one daughter:

  • Richard Stephen Cayley Cornwall-Legh (* 1976)
  • Kenelm Michael Cornwall-Legh (* 1978)
  • George Henry Cornwall-Legh (* 1982)
  • Caroline Philadelphia Cornwall-Legh (* 1983)
