The title was first created on June 23, 1295 in the Peerage of England for Reginald de Gray by being convened to the English Parliament by Writ of Summons . Strictly speaking , the title is only called Baron Gray , the suffix after the original ancestral seat of the barons, Wilton Castle in Herefordshire , is usually only included to distinguish it from the other baronies Gray . His descendant, the 15th baron, had participated in a conspiracy against King James I ("Bye Plot") and was therefore stripped of his titles and dignities in 1603 for high treason. Since he died unmarried and childless and was the last male descendant of the first baron, the title became extinct with his death in 1614.
On May 15, 1784, the title Baron Gray de Wilton , of Wilton Castle in the County of Hereford, for Sir Thomas Egerton, 7th Baronet, was recreated in the Peerage of Great Britain . He was a great-great-great-grandson of the sister of the last Baron's first bestowal and in 1756 had inherited the title of Baronet , of Egerton and Oulton in the County of Chester , from his father , which had been bestowed on the husband of this sister on April 5, 1617. On June 26, 1801, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , he was also awarded the titles Earl of Wilton and Viscount Gray de Wilton with the special addition, so that, in the absence of male offspring, this can also be passed on to his nephew Hon. Thomas Grosvenor and his male offspring be. When he died in 1814 without leaving any sons, the baron title Gray de Wilton expired, the earldom and the visountcy fell to his nephew and the baronetcy to a fourth cousin.
