Earl of Wilton
Earl of Wilton , of Wilton Castle in the County of Hereford , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on June 26, 1801 for former House of Commons MP Thomas Egerton, 1st Baron Gray de Wilton . Together with the earliest dignity he was given the subordinate title Viscount Gray de Wilton , which is also used as a courtesy title for the marriage of the earl in question. In view of the fact that Egerton had no sons and that his only daughter was married to Robert Grosvenor, 1st Marquess of Westminster and already had three sons, the award was made with the special addition that the title would pass to the second and all younger sons of his daughter could. This also happened when the first earl died in 1814.
When the 7th Earl died in 1999, his two titles fell to his fourth cousin Francis Grosvenor, 6th Baron Ebury . This already carried the title Baron Ebury , created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1857 , which has since also been a subordinate title of Earl.
Other titles
The first Earl had already been raised on May 15, 1784 in the Peerage of Great Britain to Baron Gray de Wilton , of Wilton Castle in the County Hereford. However, due to the lack of male descendants, this title expired with his death. In addition, the first Earl had inherited the title (7th) Baronet , of Egerton and Oulton in the County of Chester , created on April 5, 1617 in the Baronetage of England from his father as early as 1756 . This fell to a distant relative when the first earl died.
The third earl was raised to Baron Gray de Radcliffe , of Radcliffe in the County Palatine of Lancaster , in 1875, seven years before he would inherit the dignity of the earl . He died childless in 1885, so that this barony, which belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom, became extinct.
