Richard D. Woods

Richard David Woods (born September 4, 1935 ) is an American civil engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering .

Woods studied at the University of Notre Dame and received his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1967 with Frank E. Richart . He was then professor of civil engineering and environmental engineering . In 2002 he retired. He was also a consulting engineer for geotechnical engineering in several engineering offices in Michigan.

He is best known as an expert in soil dynamics.

In 1989 he was chairman of the Geotechnical Engineering Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), of which he gave Terzaghi Lecturer in 1997 and of which he has been an honorary member since 2004. From 2001 to 2005 he was Vice President, North America, of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ISSMFE). In 2003 he became a member of the National Academy of Engineering .
