Richard Drögereit

Richard Robert Ferdinand Drögereit (born January 25, 1908 in Essen , † October 2, 1977 in Bad Bergzabern ) was a German historian and archivist .

His parents were the office manager Richard Drögereit and Luise, geb. Barthold. In 1936 he married Hertha Eller.

Drögereit attended the Krupp-Oberrealschule in Essen and studied in Göttingen , Münster and Exeter in addition to his main subjects history, English and German from 1927, also historical auxiliary sciences with Alfred Hessel and Karl Brandi , from whom he received his doctorate in 1932 in Göttingen with a thesis on the Anglo-Saxon royal chancellery.

After preparatory service, he became archivist at the Hanover State Archives in 1934 , interrupted by the Yugoslav prisoner-of-war until 1949. In 1960 he was transferred to the Lower Saxony State Archives in Stade , where he was in charge until 1973.

From 1955 he was co-editor of the yearbook of the Society for Church History of Lower Saxony and of Studies on Church History in Lower Saxony.

At the University of Hamburg , he also took on teaching positions at the history seminar from 1962 and received an honorary professorship, in 1969 a professorship for historical auxiliary sciences. Drögereit dealt with Anglo-Saxon history (relations between northwest Germany and England) and the early history of the duchies of Bremen and Verden (Verden founding falsification). Based on his cultural-historical studies on Werden Abbey and the origin of Heliand, he was interested in questions of the history of religion (mission history, church and altar patrons ). After recovering from a long-ago illness, he suddenly died in Bergzabern.
