Richard Dyer (* 1945 in Leeds ) is a British Anglicist and author .

Life

Dyer studied English, Romance languages, German and philosophy at the University of St Andrews . He graduated from the University of Birmingham with a PhD in English . He got a job as a professor at the University of Warwick in the field of film studies. At King's College London he has worked as a university teacher since of 2006. In addition, he also took on visiting lectureships at various universities in the USA and Europe, including Germany.

Dyer wrote several works as a writer, particularly in the field of film theory. In his first independent book Stars from 1979, he dealt with the importance of film stars for the film business. He discussed the images and advertising methods with which film stars such as Marlon Brando , Bette Davis , Marlene Dietrich , Greta Garbo , Robert Redford and John Wayne were seen and marketed in public. In his later works, Dyer often dealt with depictions of homosexuality (in this context he also appeared in the documentary The Celluloid Closet in 1995 ), sexes and skin colors in the cinema. He is also considered a specialist in music in film and has published works on the interpretation and meaning of musical films as well as a biography of the composer Nino Rota .
