Richard Jelinek

Richard Jelinek (born March 12, 1914 in Vienna ; † February 6, 2010 ) was an Austrian civil engineer for foundation engineering and soil mechanics, professor at the TH Munich .

Jelinek studied under Karl von Terzaghi in Vienna and was his assistant. He received his doctorate with his successor OK Fröhlich in Vienna in 1943 with a theoretical thesis. After the Second World War, he was at the Earthworks Institute of the TH Munich from 1944, where he became operations manager in 1948 and was teaching soil mechanics at the TH, and from 1954 as a full professor for foundation engineering and soil mechanics. He made the Geotechnical Institute of the TH Munich one of the largest in Germany and trained numerous engineers in southern Germany, including around 20 doctoral students. In 1979 he officially retired, but headed the institute until it was handed over to his successor Rudolf Floss in 1980.

He dealt with theoretical soil mechanics and was the translator and editor of the monograph Theoretical Soil Mechanics by Karl von Terzaghi. He also dealt with building ground improvement, grout anchors (with Helmut Ostermayer, who received his doctorate in 1976) and anchored retaining walls.

Jelinek also dealt with the Leaning Tower of Pisa and recommended the application of surface loads as early as 1960, which was implemented in the 1990s. At the time, Jelinek recommended about ten times the 600 t that was finally applied in 1993. With the measures taken in 1994, the increase in inclination could actually be stopped.
