Richard L. Hoffman

Richard Lawrence Hoffman (born September 25, 1927 in Roanoke , Virginia , † June 10, 2012 in Clifton Forge , Virginia) was an American zoologist .

He is known as an international bipedalist and a leading authority on the natural history of Virginia and the Appalachians .

Hoffman was a biology professor at Virginia Radford University for nearly 30 years and a curator of invertebrates at the Virginia Museum of Natural History for another 20 years.

He co-founded the Virginia Natural History Society, has described over 400 species of millipede, and wrote more than 480 scientific publications. More than 30 species of animals are named in his honor, including the salamander Plethodon hoffmani and the centipede Nannarrup hoffmani .
