Richard Mathes

Richard Mathes (born August 3, 1940 in Essen ; † July 2, 2005 there ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman, philosophy professor and rector of the Pontifical Institute Collegio Teutonico di Santa Maria dell'Anima from 1998 to 2004.

Life

After graduating from high school, Mathes first became a soldier in the German Bundeswehr . He became a reserve officer up to the rank of major, with his higher orders he retired from the Bundeswehr. He studied Catholic theology in Innsbruck, Paris, Cambridge, Rome and Bonn. At the Institut catholique de Paris he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD , 1974 in Bonn as Dr. theol.

As a deacon he became secretary of the German-speaking pilgrims' office in Rome in 1975 and was responsible for organizing the German-speaking pilgrims in the Holy Year. In 1976 Mathes was ordained a priest and then worked as a chaplain in Bochum.

1977 Richard Mathes got a reputation as a professor of philosophy at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas "Angelicum" (Pontificia Universitas Studiorum a Sancto Thoma Aquinas in Urbe - PUST) of the Dominican Order in Rome. He also became director of the Notre-Dame Center , a large Jerusalem pilgrim hotel, and commissioner of the Holy See at the papal mission in Jerusalem. Mathes was committed to understanding between Palestinians and Israelis. He also campaigned for ecumenism and for Christian-Jewish contacts. From 1993 he was part of the working groups that prepared the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Israel and the Vatican.

In 1998 Mathes moved back to Rome and until 2004 was rector of the Collegio Teutonico di Santa Maria dell'Anima and the Pontifical College of Priests Santa Maria dell'Anima - in short: "Anima" - near Piazza Navona in downtown Rome.

Mathes was a member of the KDStV Bavaria Bonn and a founding member of the Roman Catholic German student association KAV Capitolina Rom in the CV .
