Richard A. Meserve

Richard Andrew Meserve (born November 20, 1944 in Medford , Massachusetts ) is an American physicist , science organizer and lawyer .

Life

Meserve studied at Tufts University through 1966 with a bachelor's degree. In 1975 he earned a PhD from Harvard Law School and received his PhD ( Ph.D. ) from Stanford University in 1976 with a thesis on applied physics . He specialized early on in topics that are important at the interface between law on the one hand and science and technology on the other. He worked in the field of environmental law , nuclear law issues relating to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. In 1981 he joined the law firm Covington & Burlington and became a partner in that firm. He worked as a consultant to various national authorities and institutions as well as international organizations. Among other things, he was chairman of a committee that examined the security of nuclear material on the territory of the former Soviet Union. From 1999 to 2003 he was Chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and then from April 2003 to August 2014 President of the Carnegie Institution for Science . He then returned to Covington & Burling as Senior Of Counsel .

In 1989, Meserve was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society, and in 1994 a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2002 he became a member of the American Philosophical Society and in 2003 of the National Academy of Engineering . In 2011 he was accepted as an external member of the Russian Academy of Sciences . In 2008 Meserve received the AAAS Philip Hauge Abelson Prize .
