Richard Payne Knight

Richard Payne Knight (born February 15, 1750 in Wormesley Grange . Herefordshire , England , † April 23, 1824 in London , England) was a British art connoisseur, collector and amateur archaeologist (member of the Society of Dilettanti ).

Life

His grandfather had become rich with the rise of the iron industry in Shropshire. Richard Payne Knight's father was a clergyman. He was a sickly child and was never sent to university. From 1767 he made several trips to Italy.

Richard Payne Knight is best known for his archaeological and aesthetic writings. Nikolaus Pevsner , art historian and profound expert on the history of architecture, even devoted a separate chapter to him in his book Architecture and Design .
