The Whitworth Art Gallery is an art museum and exhibition building in Manchester , England .

history

The museum was founded in 1889 after the English industrialist Sir Joseph Whitworth made a donation for the Whitworth Institute and Park . Construction of the original building began in 1894 and the museum was inaugurated in 1908. Architects were J. and JW Beaumont. The exhibition area for the 55,000 exhibits in the collections was expanded in 1995 by installing a mezzanine in the center of the building. This extension received an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects . In February 2015, the rooms were enlarged to double the previous area and at the same time they were connected to Whitworth Park . The architects for this work, Mc Innes Usher Mc Knight Architects (MUMA), were nominated for the British Stirling Prize in 2015 .

The University of Manchester has been responsible for the operation and organization of the museum since 1958 .

Collections

The holdings of the Whitworth Art Gallery include works by British artists such as William Turner , Ford Madox Brown , Richard Payne Knight , John Martin and William Blake, as well as by artists of classical modernism such as Paul Gauguin , Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso . In addition, the gallery focuses on modern artists such as Henry Moore , Barbara Hepworth , Eduardo Paolozzi , David Hockney , Georges Adéagbo , Francis Bacon and Antoni Tàpies . The gallery owns the marble sculpture Genesis by Jacob Epstein , created between 1929 and 1931 .
