Richard Peters Junior
Richard Peters Jr. (born June 22, 1744 near Philadelphia , Province of Pennsylvania , † August 22, 1828 there ) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1782 and 1783 he was a delegate for Pennsylvania in the Continental Congress ; later he became a federal judge .
Career
Richard Peters was the son of William Peters (1702–1786), who came from Liverpool in 1739 and settled in Philadelphia, where he acquired and cultivated larger estates. William Peters also worked as a lawyer and judge. The son studied at the College of Philadelphia , later the University of Pennsylvania , until 1761 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar, he began to work in Philadelphia in this profession. From 1771 until the beginning of the revolution he held the office of the Register of the Admiralty in his home country . He joined the American movement and served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War . Between 1776 and 1781 he was also a leading member ( Secretary ) of the Continental Board of War . In 1782 and 1783 he represented Pennsylvania in the Continental Congress. From 1787 to 1790 Peters sat in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania , of which he was president. In 1791 he was also a member of the State Senate . Between 1792 and his death in 1828, he served as a judge in the federal district court for the District of Pennsylvania. He died in Philadelphia on August 22, 1828.
