Richard Poiger
Richard Poiger (born May 22, 1987 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian basketball player . The 2.02-meter-tall winger was an Austrian team player, played for St. Pölten and Gmunden in the Bundesliga and also played for the German first division clubs Leverkusen and Gießen in the course of his career.
career
Poiger, whose parents Gisela and Peter were Austrian national basketball players, played as a youth for the Viennese club DC Xion Timberwolves and in 2004 moved to the German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen . For the Rhinelander he was first used in the second men's team (regional league) and in the youth team. In 2006 he became German champions with Leverkusen's U20 team, and in the 2006/07 season he played nine Bundesliga games for Leverkusen. Between 2007 and 2009 he represented the colors of the Gießen 46ers in eight Bundesliga games and collected additional minutes in the shirt of the second division team TV Lich, the Gießen cooperation club.
In 2009 Poiger returned to his home country and strengthened the UBC St. Pölten until 2011 . In the 2010/11 season he recorded the best statistical values of his Bundesliga career: In 29 games he averaged 14.9 points and 4.8 rebounds. He was then selected by the internet service eurobasket.com in the selection of the best local players in the Bundesliga for the 2010/11 season. Poiger moved to Swans Gmunden in the run-up to the 2011/12 season within the Bundesliga . In 2012 he became Austrian runner-up and cup winner with Gmunden. After the end of the 2014/15 season, Poiger initially withdrew from the Bundesliga, but returned to the Gmunden squad in January 2016 and played there until the end of the 2015/16 season. In the summer of 2016 he took over the position of managing director of the operating company of Swans Gmunden and the post of sporting director.
National team
Poiger was a team player in the age groups U16, U18 and U20 and took part in several junior European championships. At the U20-B-EM in 2007 he was the second best thrower of the tournament with an average of 19.7 points per encounter. He later also played for Austria's men's national team and took part in European Championship playoffs.
