Richard S. Stolarski

Richard S. Stolarski (* around 1943 ) is an American physicist and ozone researcher.

Stolarski earned his bachelor's degrees in physics and mathematics from the University of Puget Sound in 1963 and his PhD in physics from the University of Florida in 1966 . He then spent seven years at the University of Michigan Space Physics Research Laboratory , where he studied the thermosphere and ionosphere .

Stolarski was 30 years at the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA . Here he was the author of an early work with Ralph J. Cicerone (whom he knew from the University of Michigan), which warned of chlorine radicals in the catalytic breakdown of ozone in the stratosphere . The research was initiated in 1973 by the planning for the space shuttle, which also contained chlorine in the exhaust gases. In a 1974 Science article, they warned of the effects of CFCs in aerosol cans on the ozone layer, something that Mario J. Molina and Sherwood Rowland had previously pointed out in Nature that same year . In 1974 he went to NASA's Johnson Space Flight Center, where he dealt with environmental aspects of the space shuttle, and in 1976 he went to Goddard Space Flight Center, where he dealt with studies of the stratosphere. At NASA, he worked on satellite measurements of ozone (first with the TOMS, Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer, on the Nimbus-7 satellite). In 1986 they confirmed observations of a spring ozone hole over Antarctica by Farmer, Gardiner and Shanklin from the British Antarctic Survey of 1985. In the 1990s he was involved in NASA's program of the effects of air traffic on the stratosphere.

In 2010 he retired from the GSFC and was awarded a research professorship at Johns Hopkins University . Most recently he has been working on computer models of chemistry and the chemical evolution of the atmosphere with inferences about its composition in the earth's past and with regard to the reaction of the atmosphere to external disturbances.

He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and received the NASA Exceptional Achievement Award . He received the US EPA Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award and the UNEP Global Ozone Award .
