The Richardson River rises from a nameless lake. It flows mainly in an easterly direction. It flows parallel to the lower reaches of the Rae River, which runs to the north . The Richardson River turns north just before the confluence and finally pours into Richardson Bay about 30 km west of Kugluktuk , about one kilometer south of the mouth of the Rae River. The Richardson River has a length of about 160 km. It drains the area north of the Dismal Lakes .
The Richardson River was named in honor of the Scottish polar explorer Sir John Richardson .
