Richie Powell

Richard "Richie" Powell (born September 5, 1931 in New York City , New York , † June 26, 1956 in Bedford , Pennsylvania ) was an American pianist , composer and arranger of modern jazz .

Richie Powell was the younger brother of Bud Powell . He studied in New York and played in New York and Philadelphia from 1949 to 1951 . From 1951 to 1952 he worked for Paul Williams , 1952 to 1954 for Johnny Hodges and was then a member of the quintet of Max Roach and Clifford Brown . His reputation was largely based on his arrangements. He also made records with Sonny Rollins and Dinah Washington . Powell was killed in a car accident along with his wife Nancy and Clifford Brown.
