production

Background and development

After the completion of the third season, with no announcement of a sequel or the announcement of the production status, it remained questionable whether there will be a fourth season. In March 2018, co-creator Dan Harmon tweeted that he hadn't started writing a new season yet, partly because Adult Swim hadn't ordered any new episodes yet. He cited the reason for the delay that the contract negotiations had become more complicated compared to the previous seasons.

Co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland wanted to know there were a lot more seasons of Rick and Morty so they could focus on one show and minimize work on other projects. Harmon also said that he would like the seasons to have more than ten episodes and said, "Now I'm doing the fourth season of Rick and Morty and I want to prove that I've grown." This referred to the fact that the third season only had ten instead of the planned fourteen episodes and he now wants to work more efficiently, control perfectionism and avoid previous mistakes.

After lengthy negotiations, Adult Swim announced a long-term contract in May 2018 and ordered 70 new episodes over an unspecified number of seasons. The two co-designers were satisfied. Harmon said, "Justin and I just need enough episodes and the right kind of deal that will give us permission to do what we want, what the show is about. We have all of that and we are both very excited ”.

A year later at the WarnerMedia 2019 Upfronts presentation, the debut of the fourth season of Rick and Morty was announced in November 2019, making the two-year break between seasons three and four the longest break in the series' history. Even if the fourth season only contains ten episodes, the makers are confident that the contract with the other 70 episodes will reduce the waiting time between the seasons and there will be more episodes per season. In October 2019, it was announced that the first five episodes of the fourth season would premiere on November 10 and the remaining five in the future.

Text, recording and animation

Writing began in June 2018 when Roiland said that in addition to maintaining quality, the writers need to work faster this time. Additionally, Harmon expressed his intention to move the series forward by working with the animators and making any necessary corrections along the way, rather than applying his perfectionist tendencies in the early stages of writing.

In July 2018, Harmon and the writer Mike McMahan published pictures from the author's room on social media, which showed "story circles" on a blackboard. Developed by Harmon, this eight-step narrative formula (a simplified version of Joseph Campbell's general narrative framework known as the Hero's Journey) was used in previous seasons to outline the narrative arc of an episode. It shows how the main character leaves his comfort zone in order to get along in an unfamiliar situation and to achieve his goal and how it changes the character when he comes back into the comfort zone. However, Emmy magazine reported after an interview with Harmon that the writing team intended to "shake things up with a more anarchic writing style." That was a rather unconstructive approach, in which instead of focusing on the structure of the story, ideas, jokes and dialogues were primarily cultivated and the stories were then built around these moments. Regarding the season's narrative arc, Roiland said the season included "strong episodic episodes" and advised fans to watch them in the correct order.

In October 2019, composer, Ryan Elder, told Inverse that he expected to get involved in the season when the writing process was partially completed. The first guest voice was revealed in November 2019 when Sam Neill tweeted that he enjoyed working with Rick and Morty. This indicates that the team had already finished some episodes. Roiland later announced Paul Giamatti, Taika Waititi and Kathleen Turner as season four star guests.

In December 2018, Bardel Entertainment, Rick and Morty's Canadian animation studio, began hiring Toon Boom Harmony animators and FX artists to join the show's animation team. In January 2019, Eric Bofa Nfon posted on his Twitter account a photo from a conference room showing lead animator Etienne Aubry and line producer Mark Van Ee, which indicated the start of the animation process for the season. Roiland said if the episodes were returned "in color" from the studio, the writers would try to make any necessary adjustments that could improve the episodes. Even so, he was satisfied with the work that had been done during the season.
