Karl Zeno Rudolf (Ridolfo) Schadow (born July 9, 1786 in Rome ; † January 31, 1822 there ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Rudolf Schadow was the eldest son and student of Johann Gottfried Schadow . Growing up in Berlin, he went to Rome in 1810 with his brother Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow to study, where he took over Christian Daniel Rauch's studio . In contrast to his brothers Friedrich Wilhelm and Felix Schadow , he decided not to paint, but instead became a sculptor. His first independent work, a statue of Paris , was exhibited in the Berlin Academy in 1812 . It clearly shows the influence of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen .

Affected by homesickness and low self-confidence, Schadow returned to Berlin for a short time, but traveled back to Rome in January 1812, accompanied by Christian Daniel Rauch. He converted to Catholicism in 1814 . He turned down a professorship at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1818 and stayed in Rome. He died only 36 years old and was buried in Rome in Sant'Andrea delle Fratte .

Works

Schadow showed a more romantic than classicistic approach to sculpture with a sentimental tone.
