The company Tiroler Glashütte GmbH, known under the brand name Riedel Glas , is an Austrian producer of wine glasses and other glass products related to wine enjoyment. The company's headquarters are in Kufstein in Tirol (Austria).

history

The company refers to the history of the Riedel family of glassmakers, which began in 1673 with the glass merchant Johann Christoph Riedel. His son was a glass painter and grandson Johann Leopold Riedel (1726–1800) ran his own glassworks in northern Bohemia from 1746 and opened several other glassworks over the years. A significant expansion occurred with Josef Riedel the Elder. Ä. (1816–1894) , now in the sixth generation. During the Industrial Revolution , known as the Glass King of the Jizera Mountains , he expanded the family business to include eight glassworks, two textile factories and several coal mines. His son Josef Anton Riedel (1862–1924) studied chemistry and developed essential processes for the manufacture of hollow glass for households, but also for technical and industrial applications. Walter Riedel (1895–1974), now in the eighth generation, expanded the company and manufactured glass jewelry and crystal, embroidery beads, lamps, technical glass and high-quality glassware. His products received numerous awards in the interwar period. During the Second World War he manufactured picture tubes for radar applications and was therefore held in Soviet captivity until 1955 after the war and expropriated in communist Czechoslovakia. In 1957 the family started again with a business in Kufstein.

On March 16, 1946, Walter Riedel's son, 21-year-old Claus Josef Riedel , escaped from captivity by jumping out of a prisoner train at the Brenner Pass. With financial help from the Swarovski family, who had been running a factory for cut gemstones in Wattens / Tyrol since 1895 , Claus Riedel was given the chance to take over the Tyrolean glassworks from bankruptcy in 1954. The founding son Daniel Swarovski had been apprenticed to Claus Riedel's great-grandfather Josef. A year later, in 1955, father Walter came back from captivity. Claus Riedel set up the Tyrolean glassworks as a factory together with his father. 200 years after the first Wald-Glas-Hütte was founded in Bohemia, glass production was resumed in Kufstein in 1956 under the name Riedel-Glas. Claus Riedel died on March 17, 2004 at the age of 79.

Today the company is run in the 10th and 11th generation by Georg Josef Riedel and his son Maximilian. On September 17, 2004, Riedel took over 100% of the shares in FX Nachtmann Bleikristall GmbH and, with it, its direct competitor Spiegelau . The brands Riedel, Nachtmann and Spiegelau operate under the name Riedel Glass Works. In 2006, Nachtmann contributed to the positive overall result of the group on its own. In 2007, the Riedel Group achieved sales of 250 million euros with its three-brand concept, which it will also be maintaining - after 240 million in 2006.

On December 20, 2004 Georg Riedel appointed his son, Maximilian J. Riedel, as CEO of the Riedel subsidiary "Riedel Crystal of America". Maximilian Riedel, 11th generation of the family business, responsible for the North American market as “Vice President” since January 2001, was able to increase Riedel's sales figures in North America from 2001 to 2004 by 75%, making the USA the largest export market for Make Riedel. As CEO, he is responsible for both the American and Canadian markets. On January 18, 2006, Rocco Rafael, the son of Georg Riedel's daughter Laetizia Riedel-Röthlisberger, was born. He founded the 12th Riedel generation.

The Nachtmann plant with 260 employees in Sankt Oswald-Riedlhütte in Bavaria was closed in 2009.

The Nachtmann plant in Frauenau in the Bavarian district of Regen was also closed on October 31, 2018 , 80 employees lost their jobs at what used to be the largest employer in the municipality with 200 jobs.
