List of grape varieties

The white Riesel grape variety is an interspecific new breed between Riesling and an unknown resistance partner. Genes of the Amur vine ( Vitis amurensis ) and Vitis vinifera have been detected. The new grape variety was bred by the Swiss grapevine grower Valentin Blattner in 1989 in Soyhières in the Swiss canton of Jura and has become known under the cultivation number VB 11-11-89-12.

The wine is characterized by a pleasantly mild acidity and a fine scent of apricots, white flowers and local apples, reminiscent of Riesling.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The grapes of the new grape variety are cylindrical and compact without shoulders. The berries are round, small and attractive because of their bright yellow color. The intensely glossy leaves with strong indentations are striking. The maturity is reached around the beginning of September. Healthy grapes can easily be harvested later.

The grape variety is characterized by very good resistance to oidium ( powdery mildew ) and good resistance to downy mildew ( downy mildew ), but it is susceptible to botrytis ( gray mold rot ). Since budding is relatively late, there is little danger of late frosts. The vine is not very sensitive to winter frosts.
