The Legendary Funny Cider Sessions - Vol. 1 (German The legendary fun cider sessions - Vol. 1) and SWAG (German Booty) are two music albums by Roger Chapman and his companion band The Shortlist, which were released under the project name Riff Burglars ( German). [Guitar] riff thieves ) were released. They were released in 1982 and 1983 under the Line Records label and are assigned to the genre of rock, blues and rock & roll.

Music genre

Music style and criticism

With a few exceptions ( Big Roll Daddy, Stovepipe and others ) these publications contain reinterpretations of classic blues and rock & roll songs by Chuck Berry, Albert King, Cream, Willie Dixon and many others. These works were hardly noticed by the public. According to Mac Beaulieu, the music is made for fans who like rock & roll standards.

History of origin

Roger Chapman is described by his music critics as a workaholic because, in addition to his solo albums and concert appearances, he also worked with many other artists in the late 1970s and early 1980s, such as Mike Batt , Rainer Baumann , Mike Oldfield and the jam band Hinkley's Heroes. From this the reef of Burglar emerged. They consisted of musicians who partly played in his backing band The Shortlist or who already worked with other renowned bands and later joined The Shortlist , such as Boz Burrell on bass (Streetwalkers, King Crimson and founding member of Bad Company ), saxophonist Nick Pentelow ( Wizzard ), Mickey Moody (Mike Oldfield, Gerry Rafferty ), Alan Coulter ( Procol Harum ), but also the shortlisted guitarist Geoff Whitehorn (among others for Paul Rodgers , Manfred Mann's Earth Band ). Both long players were produced by Roger Chapman with little effort and are to be understood as music projects with a fun factor, according to the text accompanying the albums. Chapman sang a little more than half of all thirty songs with seventeen tracks. His shortlist guitarist Geoff Whitehorn, for example, took over the vocals on the cream song “Strange Brew,” while Tim Hinkley lent his voice to Freddie King's “Big Leg Woman”. The original composition Big Roll Daddy (Chapman / Seals) was covered by Chapman's music idol Jerry Lee Lewis and published on his 1991 album Honky Tonk Rock 'n' Roll Piano, which Chapman was proud of. All musicians were also listed on the albums under pseudonyms without reference to aliases, in order to differentiate themselves from Roger Chapman & The Shortlist. Chapman called himself Sonny Spider. He occasionally used this pseudonym for other productions.

Both albums were only released in Germany in their production years, as Chapman had his biggest fans there. Later in 1998 and 2005 further publications were added in the UK and Russia. The albums couldn't chart.

reception

The music critic Mac Beaulieu judged The Legendary Funny Cider Sessions - Vol. 1 it was a swinging, enthusiastic work in the selection of the pieces of music and their musical implementation. SWAG, on the other hand, sounds sterile, feels average and the poor production drives life out of the songs. All in all, however, it is professional entertainment and made for listeners interested in rock standards.
