The refuge is located on the Alpe Angeloga alpine pasture within the municipality of Campodolcino in the rearmost Valle Spluga at an altitude of 2044  m slm. In the immediate vicinity of the Rifugio Chiavenna there are several alpine huts and the small mountain lake of the same name, Angeloga. The hut is, among other things, the starting point for the ascent of Pizzo Stella 3163  m slm

history

The refuge was opened in July 1928 after a two-year construction period next to an already existing smaller hut serving as a refuge. The latter can still be seen today next to the rifugio. The Italian poet and nature lover Giovanni Bertacchi was also present at the official opening ceremony .

During the Second World War , the rifugio was damaged in fighting between partisans and Italian fascists when, in the final phase of the war, on April 26, 1945, a hundred members of a special unit of the fascist militia attacked around 20 partisans who had withdrawn in the rifugio. In the attack, known as the Battle of Angeloga, two partisans were killed and several injured and the rifugio and the surrounding mountain huts were set on fire.

In 1949 the damaged building became the property of the CAI Section Chiavenna and was repaired again.

In the period that followed, the Rifugio Chiavenna was rebuilt and expanded several times. In the 1970s it was increased and the number of sleeping places increased. It was then gradually modernized from the end of the 1980s.
