The Rigi was a passenger - motor boat on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland . From 1955 to 2016, it was operated by the Lake Lucerne Shipping Company (SGV).
history
The two-deck saloon motor ship Rigi was built by the then “Steamship Company of the Vierwaldstättersee” (DGV), today's SGV, in their own shipyard in Lucerne. It replaced the paddle steamer Winkelried (1876) in operation , but was given the name of Rigi (1848) , which was retired in 1952 and is now on display in the Swiss Museum of Transport . The hull was made of electrically welded sheet steel , while the superstructures were made from the aluminum alloy Anticorodal and riveted. The original four-stroke diesel engines from Saurer were later replaced by engines from MAN . The keel was laid in 1952, the launch on June 15, 1955 and commissioning on July 2, 1955. The ship's bell was cast in 1913 and comes from the previous Rigi from 1848.
In 1962/1963 the ship was rebuilt. In order to be able to pass the new Acheregg bridge near Stansstad , the Rigi was given a retractable chimney and a telescopic mast, and the upper part of the wheelhouse was also designed to be retractable. Another renovation took place in 1995/1996.
The Rigi was replaced in 2017 by the larger new Diamant building. It ran according to the timetable for the last time on December 31, 2016. In February 2018 it was scrapped in Beckenried .
commitment
The Rigi was designed with many open deck spaces for summer traffic, but was also frequently used in winter and for a long time was mostly at the top of the SGV's performance. Since the commissioning of the three panorama ships specially designed for winter use, Weggis (1990) , Brunnen (1991) and Flüelen (1991) , the Rigi has been used less often in winter. However , it was in daily use between Easter and All Saints Day . Due to its good nautical properties, the Rigi was also used as a training ship .
Incidents
In 1967 the hydraulic mast was damaged in an accident. It was then replaced by a manually folding mast made of light metal.
