Rigoberto López Pérez

Rigoberto López Pérez (born May 13, 1929 in Leon , Nicaragua ; † September 21, 1956 ibid) was a Nicaraguan poet. In 1956 he committed an assassination attempt on Anastasio Somoza García .

Life

Rigoberto López Pérez was in exile in El Salvador for a few years . There he worked as a traveling salesman for records and was involved in the Partido Revolucionario de Unificación Democrática . In Nicaragua, Rigoberto López Pérez was a member of the Partido Liberal Independiente .

On September 21, 1956, Pérez found admission to an electoral convention in the Casa de Obrero in León, where Anastasio Somoza García stood for re-election. He disguised himself as a waiter, so he could get into the immediate vicinity of the President and seriously injure him with five shots from his Smith & Wesson .38 & .32 double action . The Guardias Nacionales of Somoza's bodyguard by the people shot Lopéz Pérez immediately afterwards. A short time later, Anastasio Somoza García was taken to the US military hospital Hospital Gorgas by military aircraft in the Panama Canal zone, which was then still under the control of the USA , where he died 8 days later. After the death of Anastasio Somoza García, his son Luís Somoza Debayle succeeded him as President of Nicaragua.

Afterlife

As a tyrant murderer , López Pérez is now widely regarded in Nicaragua as a national hero . With Decree No. 536 of September 21, 1981, the Sandinista government officially awarded him the title of "Héroe Nacional".
