history
History until 1920
Although there is evidence that it was first mentioned in a document in 1401, it is generally assumed that this Slavic village already existed in the 11th century. Christianization was later carried out by monks from the Saalfeld Benedictine monastery . The fortified church with the slits in the cemetery wall and an outer still-indicated ditch is also under monument protection, as are two half-timbered houses in the village. Before the Reformation, the church belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Saalfeld as an important parish church . The place belonged to the Reussian "Herrschaft Ebersdorf ", which at times belonged to the lines Reuss-Lobenstein and Reuss-Ebersdorf . In 1848 the place came to the Principality of Reuss Younger Line (from 1852 to the Schleiz District Office ) and in 1919 to the People's State of Reuss . The place has belonged to Thuringia since 1920.
1920 to the present
During the time of the GDR, Gahma belonged to the Lobenstein district in the Gera district . After 1990 it was a member of the Saale-Sormitz-Höhen administrative community . On September 2, 1995, the neighboring village of Gleima was incorporated, which had 88 inhabitants at that time. Since the municipal reform in Thuringia on July 1, 1999, it has been part of the Remptendorf municipality .
The place and its surroundings are mainly shaped by agriculture. Where previously small farms tilled the fields, today an agricultural cooperative controls the land. Craft businesses are also domiciled in the community.
The sports club TSV Gahma e.V. has existed since 1963. V., founded as TSG Progress Gahma , in which athletics, bowling, volleyball and disabled sports are played alongside soccer.
The traditions go back even further. Gahma has had a volunteer fire brigade for more than 100 years and even a fire engine for 200 years. Up to the present day the birch stick at Pentecost has been preserved for all unmarried young girls and the children’s Mardi Gras begging .
The setting of the maypole on the eve of May 1st followed by a social get-together around the campfire, the footballers' Whitsun tournament on Whitsun Saturday and the fair with dancing and morning pint on the second weekend in November are events that are held every year.

coat of arms
The municipal coat of arms shows a group of six deciduous trees and above them a jumping deer in natural colors. Above all, the trees symbolize the abundance of forests, the deer is supposed to represent that Ezzo of Lorraine was hunting here as early as 1083.
