Altengesees is a small village in the middle of the Thuringian Slate Mountains with 198 inhabitants (as of 2009). It is part of the municipality of Remptendorf in the Saale-Orla district .

geography

The place Altengesees is a little bit remote from the bigger roads, in a flat depression, surrounded by wooded hills. The district of the place is shown with an area of ​​423 ha.

With the lines 554 and 630 of the KomBus Altengesees has a connection to the core town of Remptendorf as well as to the cities of Bad Lobenstein , Leutenberg and Saalfeld (Saale) .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1517, but a chapel is said to have been in the same place as early as 1300. Altengesees is one of the ancestral seats of the von Watzdorf family . The name has to do with the back seat .

The first school was built in the village as early as 1696. The church and the over 200-year-old organ, built by Christian August Gerhard , have been restored and placed under monument protection.

The place belonged to the Reussian "Herrschaft Ebersdorf ", which at times belonged to the lines Reuss-Lobenstein and Reuss-Ebersdorf . In 1848 the place came to the Principality of Reuss Younger Line (from 1852 to the Schleiz District Office ) and in 1919 to the People's State of Reuss . The place has belonged to Thuringia since 1920.

During the GDR era, Altengesees belonged to the Lobenstein district in the Gera district . After 1990, it was a member of the Saale-Sormitz-Höhen administrative community until it was incorporated into the district reform in Thuringia on July 1, 1999. Since then, it has been a part of the Remptendorf community .

The local coat of arms is shaped by the history as the headquarters of the von Watzdorf family and shows a chair, the wooden frame in brown color with green cover fabric.

economy

The largest employers in the area are the homes of the Christopherushof and the adjoining (WfbM) workshop for people with disabilities. There are also some craftsmen based and holiday apartments offer holidays in the village.
