Riho Grünthal (born May 22, 1964 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish Finnougrist .

Scientific career

Riho Manivald Villem Grünthal since the winter semester 1983/1984 studied at the University of Helsinki Finno-Ugric and Finno , graduating in 1990 with the Master (finn. Filosofian maisteri, FM) from. In 1996 he passed the licentiate examination and in 2003 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. Since 2005 Grünthal has held the professorship for Baltic Finnish languages at the University of Helsinki.

Grünthal also studied for a year in Budapest and undertook a. a. Travels in Mari El and Mordovia . He also carried out field research on the Wepsen . His research focus is on the smaller Baltic Finnish languages, in particular Wepsic , the Finnish-Ugric etymology and the Baltic Finnish language typology .

Grünthal is deputy chairman of the Finnish-Ugric Society and a member of the International Committee for the Finno-Ugric Congresses (ICFUC).

From 1987 to 1990 Grünthal was editor of the magazine estonia ( ISSN  0930-8792 ), which campaigned for the dissemination of information about Estonian literature, especially outside Estonia .

Grünthal's paternal grandfather was the Estonian poet and scientist Villem Grünthal-Ridala .
