The development plan from 1952

Riksrådsvägens radhusområde is a terraced housing estate in the Skarpnäck district in the south of Stockholm . The estate was designed by the architect Léonie Geisendorf and her husband Charles-Edouard Geisendorf and was built between 1953 and 1956.

The background for the development of the row house settlement was a state investigation from 1953, which came to the result that row houses in the form of rental apartments were made accessible to large families. In the same year the architect couple Geisendorf was commissioned to plan such a settlement in a wooded area in the south of Stockholm.

The original development plan with dead straight rows of terraced houses was heavily modified and adapted to the terrain . Through the use of prefabricated components and assembly construction with light equipment, it was possible to preserve a large part of the original vegetation and to build 114 terraced houses divided over 13 rows. The rows of houses form four green squares or courtyards that give the settlement a village character. There are no fences, but every house has its own small garden, which is only separated from the neighbors by bushes. Originally there was also a grocery store in the middle of the settlement.

Despite their small living space of only around 110 m², each house has 5–6 rooms, a kitchen, bathroom, separate toilet and a small pantry. All houses have a balcony and an open fireplace . Geisendorf succeeded in avoiding dead areas through extremely compact and efficient planning, while still making the houses surprisingly airy. The avoidance of corridors, the use of glass sliding doors and the high ceiling height on the upper floor also contributed to this. The daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter called the houses in the row house settlement Riksrådsvägen in an architectural article in November 1990 "Spacious and intimate bunk from the 1950s".

In 2000 the row houses were converted from rental apartments into condominiums and the original idea of renting was lost. Efforts are currently underway to place the estate under monument protection , which means that parts of the houses, both inside and outside, may not be changed.
