Günter Felke

Günter Michael Felke (born November 4, 1929 in Laufersweiler ; † March 22, 2005 in Mainz ) was a German entrepreneur , numismatist and cultural promoter in the Hunsrück .

Life

Günter Felke was born as the youngest son of the Hunsrück entrepreneur Michael Felke and his wife Maria, née Oberst, in the municipality of Laufersweiler in the Hunsrück. After his birth, he and his family moved to neighboring Sohren , where his father set up a furniture production company. He attended the Herzog-Johann-Gymnasium in Simmern , which he left prematurely in 1948 to take up work in his father's Felke furniture factory . Together with his two older brothers Aloys and Walter Felke , he ran the company as a junior manager alongside his father. From 1970 he and his brothers succeeded their father as managing director and followed his uncle Franz Felke in the position of technical director .

In addition to managing the family business, Günter Felke has been concerned with the history of Palatinate and Mainz numismatics since 1960 . As a collector of Roman, medieval and modern florins from the Rhineland, he handed over collections of historical exhibits to the Villa Romana in Veldenz , the Hunsrück Museum Simmern and a museum in Heidelberg . Felke wrote several treatises on coinage specifically about Veldenz. In 1980 he became a member of the Bavarian Numismatic Society. In 1981 Günter Felke published his first book on the history of local gold coins, The Coins of the Dukes of Simmern , which was followed in 1989 by the comprehensive illustrated book The Gold Coins of the Rhenish Electors 1346–1478 . In 1984 he was a co-founder of the Palatinate Numismatic Society.

Günter Felke later became more involved as a promoter in culture and education for young people in their school education. A foundation with his name awards students of the Herzog-Johann-Gymnasium in Simmern the Günter-Felke-Preis every year for outstanding achievement in various subjects.

Günter Felke was married and the father of three children.

Günter Felke Foundation

The Günter Felke Foundation was established on October 10, 1989 by Günter Felke. Since 1990 she has been awarding her prizes at the Herzog-Johann-Gymnasium in Simmern to students with outstanding achievements. Initially, the award included services in the fields of geography, history, music, visual arts and German, which, following increased popularity, expanded to include all high school subjects. A foundation board of trustees decides annually on the services and awards the prizes, until 2004 under the supervision of Günter Felke. Between 1990 and 2009, the Günter Felke Foundation awarded 305 prizes to 1,317 young people and has so far awarded prize money totaling around 100,000 euros (as of 2009). The price is supported, among other things, by the full proceeds from Günter Felke's book publication The Gold Coins of the Rhenish Electors .

Honors

For special achievements in the promotion of art and culture in the Hunsrück he received the badge of honor in 1987 and the badge of honor of the city of Simmern in 1994. In January 2000, the city awarded him honorary citizenship. In 2001 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate by the Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Kurt Beck .
