The Beef Labeling Act (RiFlEtikettG) specifies the special labeling of beef . It was enacted on the basis of EC Regulation 820/97, among other things to counteract the spread of the BSE epidemic. The Beef Labeling Act is a federal act to implement some European Union regulations regarding the tracking of the origin of beef and beef products.
In the first version from 1998, market participants were allowed to collect the labeling data as necessary, to read them and, for example, to use them to assess the meat. In this case, the market participant is everyone involved except the end consumer .
The 2nd version of November 17, 2000 stipulates mandatory labeling of beef and beef products. The labels must contain information about the birth, fattening , slaughter and cutting of the animal from which the meat originates.
The Beef Labeling Act also defines which authorities are responsible for monitoring, approving and providing information and which penalties and fines can be imposed in the event of violations.
The catalog of sentences of the law of 2000 provides for prison sentences of up to one year.
