The ring-autumn crocus ( Crocus kotschyanus ) is a plant from the genus of crocus ( Crocus ).

features

The ring autumn crocus is a perennial tuber geophyte that reaches heights of 5 to 10 cm. The tuberous shell is thin-skinned, smooth and without rings. The 3 to 4 leaves are 3 to 5 mm wide. The Perigonzipfel measure 25 to 45 × 5 to 18 mm and are blunt to pointed. The throat has a ring of orange-yellow spots and is not continuously yellow. The stylus usually has 3 branches, which are sometimes divided again.

The flowering period extends from September to October, rarely beginning in August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 10 or 20.

Occurrence

The ring autumn crocus is found in Turkey, north-west Syria, Lebanon, and western Transcaucasia. The species grows on stony-rocky, short-grass mountain steppes at altitudes from 1000 to 3250 (rarely from 550) m above sea level. NN. In Germany, feral growth from North Rhine-Westphalia is known.

Systematics

One can distinguish three subspecies:

  • Crocus kotschyanus subsp. cappadocicus B.Mathew : It occurs in central Turkey.
  • Crocus kotschyanus subsp. hakkariensis B.Mathew : It occurs in southeastern Turkey.
  • Crocus kotschyanus subsp. kotschyanus : It occurs in Turkey, Syria and Lebanon.

use

The ring autumn crocus is widely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and borders. The species has been in culture since 1853 at the latest. The cultivar 'Albus' has white flowers.
