The Ring in Gliwice ( Gleiwitz ) is a central market square in the old town .

Floor plan and history

The ring is rectangular and is part of a chessboard-like plan of the old town, in the middle of which is the town hall of Gliwice . A first town hall at this point can be traced back to the 14th century, today's town hall was built in the 17th century. Two side streets branch off at each corner. The shopping street Ulica Zwycięstwa begins on the north side . There are baroque and modern buildings and a Neptune fountain on the ring. Some of the houses on the Ring have arcades on the ground floor.

The ring measures 74 m × 74 m.

In 1794 the Neptune Fountain was built.

At the beginning of the 20th century, some buildings were replaced by new, sometimes higher, buildings (e.g. the “Deutsches Haus” hotel) or rebuilt. Markets were held on the ring until the middle of the 20th century.

The ring survived the Second World War unscathed. During the occupation of the city of Gliwice by the Red Army in 1945, a large part of the buildings in the ring were destroyed. In the following years, the ring was rebuilt according to new concepts, but with new baroque-looking houses that have no historical background. So everything was rebuilt on the east side and the north side of the ring except for 2 buildings. The town hall was supplemented by arcades at the front.

In 2002 the town hall and the facades on the ring were completely renovated.
