Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash is the 16th studio album by American country singer Johnny Cash . It was released in July 1963 on Columbia Records under the production of Don Law and Frank Jones.
Cash hadn't had a # 1 hit in a few years. His contract with Columbia expired at the end of the year and might not have been renewed had it not been for a huge hit in May with Ring of Fire , which stayed at number 1 on the Billboard country singles chart for seven weeks .
The album was then hastily put together to benefit from the success of the single, which it succeeded. Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash was the first number 1 album on the Billboard Country Albums chart when the magazine opened this section in 1963.
Songs
- The album opens with the title track Ring of Fire , the famous piece that is about the pain love can cause.
- The next track, I'd Still Be There, is a pledge of allegiance and was the B-side of Ring of Fire when it was released as a single in March 1963.
- What Do I Care is the oldest song on the album. It was formed in 1958 and was the b-side of Cash's first Columbia single, All Over Again .
- Almost as old is I Still Miss Someone , the only song on the album that had previously appeared on another album, namely in 1959 on The Fabulous Johnny Cash .
- The sentimental Forty Shades of Green , in which Cash celebrates Ireland , has a different atmosphere .
- Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord) is the interpretation of an old tradition with the Carter Family .
- The Rebel - Johnny Yuma and Bonanza were the theme songs of two well-known western series. The former was titled The Rebel and starred Nick Adams. Cash had made a few guest appearances in this series. The song was released as a single in 1959 and had a small success. Bonanza was the performance of the title song of the western series of the same name with text .
- The Big Battle is about the life of a soldier at the front and was presented to the public for the first time as a single in March 1962, but without attracting much attention.
- Remember the Alamo , composed by Jane Bowers, focused on the famous Battle of the Alamo , which only became a hot topic again in 1960 with John Wayne's film The Alamo .
- Tennessee Flat-Top Box was the B-side of the single Tall Man in 1962 and told the amusing story of a young guitarist who caused a sensation in his home country until he finally made it onto the charts.
- The end is marked by the gospel piece Peace in the Valley , which was recorded again with the Carter Family.
