The ring castle of Lyby is an archaeological discovery made in 2002, which in Viken , Southeast Norway was made. The hamlet Søndre Lyby is part of the municipality of Moss . The Lyby ring castle was discovered through a research project that is to use satellite photos to locate previously undetectable archaeological ground monuments ; color-modified spectral images are analyzed here. The ground monument had not previously been able to be found with the help of classic aerial photo analysis. It is evidently a ring wall with a diameter of 140 m and a wall width of 12 to 13 m.

The complex is dated to the 10th century . It will be placed alongside the other Viking castles in Denmark and Sweden . At that time the Oslofjord and thus also Østfold were the rulership of the Danish king. That is why people had been looking for ring castles in the Oslo Fjord for a long time. The old name Trælaberg for Oslo from the time of the Danish rule and the name Tønsberg were brought together with Trelleborg . This archaeological search has so far been unsuccessful.

The name Lyby is considered to be composed of Ly from "lýðr, ljóðr" = people's assembly and "by" = place, place where many people gather. There is also a Lyby in Viborg Amt on Jutland , where there is also a ring castle.

Another indication of Danish rule in this place is the gold spur found in Rygge in 1872 and a fitting that went with it, which was found nearby in 1917. The fitting was for the leather strap with which the spur was attached to the rider's boot. It was found at Værne Monastery 800 m from Lyby. The gold spur formed the coat of arms of the former Rygge municipality from September 30, 1984 . In the 10th century, gold spurs were reserved for the very top circles of the empire. The spur is made of 22.5 carat gold. The chasing is unprecedented in Norway. Some researchers assign the chasing to the Jelling style , others to the Hiddensee style, which was used in the immediate vicinity of Harald Blauzahn . A goldsmith's workshop from the second half of the 10th century was found near the ring castle of Borgeby in Skåne , in which jewelry in the Hiddensee style was made, among other things.

Arkeologi i nord (blog), March 29, 2005, accessed on February 19, 2011 (Norwegian): “In the farmland of Søndre Lyby there was an almost circular" ring ", which surrounded an area with a diameter of 140 meters. The "ring" is 12-13 meters wide. Possibly this "ring" represents the remains of an earth wall that was gradually plowed in, or - less likely - a refilled "ditch". ... There is no memory of this installation on Søndre Lyby's farm. In aerial photos - we have one from 1948 and one from 1956 of the area - the facility is not visible. Perhaps we still have a memory of this "ring" in the family name Ringnes , it is still widespread in Lyby's courts. The name can be traced back to around 150 years. (I dyrket mark on Søndre Lyby tegnet the nests round ”ring” which avgrenser et område with tverrmål at 140 meters. Selve ”rings” er 12-13 meters bred. Muligens representerer ”rings” restene av en jordvoll as etter hvert has Blitt dyrket bort, eller - less sannsynlig - en gjenfylt ”vollgrav”. ...
